Handmade Process
Palm-frond weaving is practiced across the oases of Egypt's New Valley, where it is one of the region's longest-running craft traditions. Fronds are cut, left to dry and harden in the sun, then split into strips by hand and woven into shape — tight and structural for a basket base, looser and more textural where the design calls for it. No two pieces are identical, since the material and the hand shaping it both vary slightly from piece to piece.
Sustainability
Palm fronds are removed from date palms every year as routine grove maintenance, regardless of whether they're woven into anything — this piece is made from that existing agricultural byproduct, not a resource extracted for it.
