Behind every GAAREED basket, tray, and lampshade is a person who knows exactly how the palm strip in her hands needs to bend. In Al-Qasr, Dakhla Oasis, that person is often Um Shaker — a master palm leaf artisan who has spent more than four decades at this craft, and who has since passed it on to more than thirty other weavers in the village.
A Craft Learned Young
Um Shaker is 55 years old and has lived her whole life in Al-Qasr. She began weaving palm leaf at the age of 12, learning directly from the women in her own family — her mother-in-law and her stepmother were both palm leaf artisans before her. That's how this craft has always moved in Al-Qasr: not through a school or a workshop manual, but from one woman's hands to another's, inside the family, across generations.
That apprenticeship gave her a foundation in the full range of the craft. Today, Um Shaker specializes in handwoven baskets, storage baskets, trays, lampshades, and traditional palm leaf home décor — the same core categories GAAREED works in, made using the techniques she was taught as a girl.
Teaching the Next Generation
What sets Um Shaker apart isn't only the decades of skill, though there's plenty of that. It's what she's done with it since: she has personally trained more than 30 artisans in traditional palm leaf weaving. In a craft that survives only as long as someone is willing to teach it hand to hand, that number matters as much as any single object she's woven. Every one of those thirty-plus weavers now carries a piece of what Um Shaker's mother-in-law and stepmother first taught her, one generation further down the line.

Why This Matters to GAAREED
GAAREED exists because exceptional craftsmanship in Al-Qasr had no reliable route to the customers who would value it — and craftsmanship, in the end, is a person, not an abstract heritage. When you hold a GAAREED basket or lampshade, the tradition behind it isn't a general claim about "Egyptian craft." It has a name, a village, and forty-plus years of specific, lived experience behind it. Um Shaker's willingness to teach more than 30 other artisans is also, quietly, one of the most important things keeping this craft alive in Al-Qasr for the next generation — which is exactly the future she says she hopes for.
