Instead, here's the specific, provable claim: the palm leaf in every GAAREED piece is an agricultural byproduct, not a resource harvested for the brand.
Where Palm Leaf Actually Comes From
Date palms need their fronds trimmed every year as routine grove maintenance — this happens regardless of whether anyone weaves the trimmed fronds into anything at all. Historically, once those fronds are removed, they're either burned or left to decompose. Either way, they become waste.
GAAREED's raw material is that existing waste stream. We are not driving additional harvesting, and we are not putting new pressure on land or trees to source what we weave. The palm fronds a GAAREED artisan works with would exist — and would need to be disposed of somehow — whether or not GAAREED exists at all.
A Craft as Old as the Groves Themselves
Palm-frond weaving isn't a modern sustainability trend retrofitted onto an old material. It's practiced across the palm-growing regions of the Middle East and North Africa — often known by the Gulf Arabic term khoos — and craft researchers describe it as one of the oldest continuously practiced human crafts, though its exact age is difficult to pin down precisely because the organic material itself decays quickly. What survives instead is a consistent, well-documented process: fronds are cut, left to dry and harden in the sun, then split into strips by hand and woven or coiled into baskets, mats, trays, and covers. In Egypt specifically, the traditional maqtaf basket — documented among artisans working near Abydos — is made this way: strips braided into bands, dried, soaked, then coiled upward and sewn with palm-fiber twine. It's the same family of technique GAAREED's own artisans in Al-Qasr use.
What Makes It Genuinely Low-Impact
A few specific, defensible facts, rather than a vague sustainability pitch.
No new resource extraction
The material would exist and require disposal regardless of GAAREED's demand for it. Buying a GAAREED piece doesn't put a single additional frond under harvest pressure.
A biodegradable, natural fiber
Palm leaf is not a synthetic wicker substitute, and it doesn't behave like one. At the end of a long, well-used life, it returns to the earth the way any natural material does — unlike plastic-based rattan-style alternatives common in mass-market home decor.
Low-impact, hand-tool production
There's no energy-intensive manufacturing step between a dried frond and a finished basket. The entire process — cutting, drying, splitting, weaving — is done by hand, with simple tools, the same way it has been for generations.
Fair labor behind every piece
Sustainability isn't only about material and process — it's also about the people doing the work. GAAREED's artisans are compensated for genuinely skilled labor at rates that reflect the craft, supporting a livelihood that keeps this weaving tradition alive in Al-Qasr.
What We Won't Claim
In the interest of the same honesty this whole approach is built on: we don't use blanket terms like carbon neutral or 100% sustainable unless we hold a real, formal certification behind them — and right now, we don't. What we can say, specifically and provably, is that GAAREED's raw material is an existing agricultural byproduct, that it's biodegradable, that its production is low-impact and handmade, and that the people who make it are paid fairly for skilled work.
